Post-Secondary Requirements
Considering that most Churchill students wish to continue with post-secondary education, and that the University of Calgary (U of C) is a hoped-for destination, I wanted to find out what was required of students to succeed at this level.
According to Dr. Tweedie (personal communication, October 3, 2014), the four aspects of literacy needed to excel in university courses are:
1. Academic vocabulary, which is drawn from corpus research on word frequency,
2. Ability to use appropriate tone/register for academic discourse (grammatical structures, complexity of sentences, etc.),
3. Reading skills (skimming, scanning, reading for main ideas, etc.), and
4. Knowledge of text features common to academic discourse (APA referencing, passive verb use, etc.).
What does this mean for high school teachers? While it would be inappropriate to instruct students in academic vocabulary and discourse beyond the requirements of a high school course, it would be beneficial to provide instruction and practice in vocabulary acquisition and development strategies, reading strategies (for a variety of texts), and strategies for recognizing and using different tones, rhetoric, and overall organizational features. The additional focus question for this project asks, "What role does ICT play in instructing and assessing students in these areas?"
